From one international flight to a domestic flight and vice versa

Normally, baggage and boarding pass are checked to transit point. You will do the check-in formality again for connection flight. (Please read more detail)

Prepare carefully before your travel to avoid incomfortness or mistakes. Below are some advices that you should keep in mind

Before leaving

To save time, please ensure that you pack only what is absolutely necessary for your trip as having really bulky or plenty of luggage can cause a security hassle, as well as induce additional, avoidable costs.

Most airlines/flights allow you to bring your own food. If you have a feeling food isn’t going to be available, tasty or will cost you too much, consider bringing your own home made meals (or snacks). And your airport terminal may offer light meals/packaged sandwiches to carry on your flight. Ask the agent at the airline ticket counter if they’re permitted.

However, if you are traveling internationally (especially to Australia, New Zealand or the U.S.) and you still have any “fresh” food (purchased/ carried-on or even part of an in-flight meal, e.g., fruit) that is not fully consumed when your flight is done, you must declare it, or you may face a significant fine. Note that you may not bring any liquids more than 3 ounces, but after check-in you may purchase non-achoholic liquids.

Check-in

Check-in for domestic flights can usually be done on the airline website up to 24 hours in advance of departure. If you have no baggage you can just proceed directly to your gate and flight with your printed boarding pass. However, some carriers insist that they inspect and verify your travel documents before allowing you to go through security, do this but there is usually a special lane provided for you. If you have baggage, drop it at the bag drop lane. Removing old tags from your bag before proceeding to the bag drop will speed up this process and avoid redirection.

If you can’t check-in online, the check-in kiosks at the airport are much the same, and issue a boarding pass for you. You then need to go to the bag drop if you have more than carry on luggage.

If you have to check-in manually, be prepared for longer queues. Have your documentation ready before you get to the counter. If other methods of check-in are made available, avoid using the traditional check-in counters unless you have special requests. Some carriers already charge a fee for using traditional check-in counters.

Boarding

The order of boarding may be specified by the gate attendant when the time comes; often:

1. Passengers in First class
2. Passengers with special needs (such as physically handicapped, elderly and those with young children)
3. Passengers in Business Class and those passengers holding top tier cards of an airline alliance’s Frequent Flyer program
4. All other passengers

Budget airlines often board passengers who have paid extra for priority boarding first, followed by those at the back of the plane.

When no order for boarding is given it may help if those seated at the back were to board first, but this doesn’t usually happen, and aisle blockages are common. To estimate where your seat is, check your airline’s website for seat maps or ask staff at the gate. Regardless of the boarding order given, you are always free to remain in the boarding lounge until the final call for the plane. If you choose to spend the least time possible in a cramped aircraft cabin, just wait in the boarding lounge until you see the last person at the gate, and join the end of the queue. Just remember, the boarding gates close 10-15 minutes before departure and no announcements will be made outside the gate area.

Immigration

Passing immigration booth can take long time. Have your documents ready (passport, visa if required, completed immigration/customs arrival card, onward/return ticket and hotel documents), and listen carefully to official instructions. Officials might require a photo or fingerprints.

Baggage claim

After your flight, you’ll get your bags after your leave the plane (on domestic flights) or after you clear immigration (on international flights). Note that you don’t need to go through baggage claim if you only brought in your carry-on or hand luggage or nothing or in other cases your bags are delivered to the place that you’ll stay. After your flight, your flight attendant or captain may tell you where you can get your bags.

Customs

Some airports have duty-free shops just before the customs station.

Customs procedures vary by country. Some countries (e.g. the United States, Canada, Australia) require travellers to fill out a customs form and submit the form to a customs officer, who then may conduct an inspection of the traveller’s bags. Some countries (e.g. most European countries) have no customs form, instead making travellers to walk through one of two parallel passageways (“channels”): nothing to declare (green channel), or goods to declare (red channel). Some EU airports have an additional blue channel for intra-EU arrivals. Customs officers may conduct random spot checks on travellers regardless of the channel used.

Goods that need to be declared include alcohol and tobacco products exceeding the personal duty-free limit, overseas purchases exceeding a certain limit, currencies above a certain amount, certain food products, and prohibited or restricted items.

Whether you fill out a customs form or walk through one of the channels, you are making a legal declaration. When in doubt, always declare the item in question and a customs officer will be able to advise you. Failure to declare or making an incorrect declaration is an offence. In mild cases this may lead to confiscation of the item and/or an on-the-spot fine; in more serious cases this may lead to an arrest and/or a notice to appear in court.

Flying with children

Children can get restless and irritable while flying and in airports. There are strategies you can follow to ensure your children enjoy the trip.

• Arrange entertainment. The best way is to bring a portable media player, books, or anything else they can use to stay occupied with themselves. Be creative. Phones, iPods and PSPs also play video these days, and are much easier to carry than a DVD player and DVDs. Kids don’t seem to mind the fact that the screen is 1″ square, and the batteries last far longer than a DVD player for a longer flights.
• Have something to suck on while ascending and descending. Don’t give it to the child when you get onto the plane – wait until you leave the runway, or it will be finished before you take off. Similarly, wait until well into the descent. During descent, you can also show them how to hold their nose, close their lips, and try to exhale; this works very well, and can be easily learned.
• Bring favorite snacks for fussy eaters. If children don’t like the airplane food and get hungry, irritability can increase.
• Aim for a window seat for the child, and sit by the window at the airport. Airports are a hive of activity, usually enough to keep any child occupied for a little while.
• Get an airport book. There are many picture books for young children that name the many things at the airport. For older children at a large airport, an airplane identification chart can pass some time.

Consider safety. If you are traveling with a child who is less than three, have them sit on an approved child carrier, not on your lap. In the unlikely event of an emergency, a lap child may impede your ability to brace. Be aware of whether there is an oxygen mask for infants on the aircraft/row.

Anticipate delays. Even the shortest flights can be delayed, involving additional time both in the terminal and on the aircraft. Ensure you have sufficient food, clothes, nappies, entertainment, to avoid turning a couple of hours delay into a nightmare.

On Vietnam Airlines’ flights, our passengers are offered baggage allowance free of charge at least as below:

Business & Premium Class: 30kg checked baggage + two pieces of hand baggage
Economy Class: 20kg checked baggage + one piece of hand baggage

 For health and safety reasons, each piece of baggage that is checked in must not exceed 32kg and total dimensions (width + heights + depth ) must not exceed 203 cm.

Important Notice:

You will be required to re-pack your bag if the weight of a single piece of your checked baggage exceeds 32kg.

Hand Baggage

Important Notice:

Forbidden Checked Baggage Items:

We reserve the right to refuse carriage of baggage or items as follows:
a. Items not properly packed in suitcases or other suitable containers ensuring safe transport with normal care and handling;
b. Items are capable of causing harm to the aircraft or persons or property on board, such as the items specified in the Dangerous Goods Regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Conditions of Carriage and terms of our contract;
c. Items that are prohibited in accordance with applicable laws, regulations or orders of any state or country of destination, departure or transit point;
d. Items that, in our view, are not suitable for carriage due to their weight, shape, size or nature;
e. Fragile or perishable items;
f. Live or dead animals;
g. Human or animal remains;
h. Fresh or frozen seafood and/or raw or frozen meat. These items can be transported as hand baggage if we accept that they have been packaged properly. Only porous foam barrel sponge and/or cold storage container containing dry/undamaged food may be permitted for processing after the authorities have inspected contents. If passengers refuse inspection, we have the right to refuse to carry that luggage;
i. Firearms and ammunition;
j. Explosives, flammable or incombustible gases (such as aerosol spray paints, butane gas, gas lighter refills) refrigerated gas (such as oxygen cylinders for underwater use, liquid nitrogen), flammable liquids (such as paints, thinners, solvents) flammable solids (such as matches, lighters), organic oxygen compounds (such as resins), poisons, infectious substances (such as viruses, bacteria), radioactive substances (such as Radium), corrosives (eg acids, alkalis, mercury, thermometers), magnetic material, and oxidizing materials (such as bleach); and
k. Weapons such as guns, swords, ancient knives and similar items. Such items may be permitted to be transported as checked baggage entirely as per our decision and are not allowed to be carried on the plane for any reason.

Valuable and fragile goods

Passengers are advised not to leave these items in checked baggage. If these items are processed with checked baggage, the customer agrees to accept all the risks during transportation. These items include money, jewelry, precious metals, silverware, electronics, computers, cameras, video cameras, transferable documents, stocks and other valuable documents including passports and personal identity cards.

The Right to Search

For safety and security reasons, we may ask you to undergo baggage examination, and pass through X-rays or other forms of screening. We have the right to check your luggage in your absence, if you cannot be found. This is done to check if your baggage contains prohibited or unacceptable goods. If you refuse such examination or screening, we have the right to refuse to carry you and your baggage on a flight without refund or responsibility. In case of injury to you or damage to baggage during screening and examination, we are not responsible for injury or loss, if this was not caused by our error or because of negligence on our part.

Checked Baggage Procedures

After checked baggage is handed to us for inspection, we will preserve that baggage and issue a baggage tag for each piece of baggage. Checked baggage must have your name or personal identity securely attached. Checked baggage is shipped on the same aircraft with you, unless we decide to transport the baggage on another flight for reasons of safety, security or other special operational requirements. If your luggage is transported on another later flight, we will deliver it to you within a reasonable time after the flight, unless you are required to be present to carry out customs procedures according to law.

Checked Baggage Fees

A baggage fee is charged for the carriage of checked baggage. The initial minimum luggage limit to be purchased is 15 kg after which then passengers can buy more weight in 5kg increments. Those passengers who carry baggage that is heavier than 15kg or their purchased limit will have to pay extra fees per kilogram at the check-in counter at the airport. Please refer to our Fee Schedule for more details on all charges. Baggage fees are not refundable and not transferable.
Young children are not to carry luggage but please note that strollers, wheelchairs, mobility-aid equipment or crutches are transported free of charge.
For health and safety reasons, we will not transport any single item heavier than 32kg or larger than 81cm high × 119cm wide ×and 119cm deep.
Sports equipment can be transported at your own risk in the cargo compartment after payment of the transport fee specified in the Schedule of Fees. Thus, you should buy necessary insurance for these devices. Musical instruments that exceed the size of baggage compartment, but weigh less than 75kg can be carried on board if you buy a seat to use for these instruments and pay appropriates fee. There is no luggage allowance for the additional seat.
– Hand baggage: Passengers (except infants) are allowed a piece of hand baggage on the aircraft. Hand luggage must not be larger than 56cm × 36cm × 23cm and the maximum weight is 7kg. Such baggage must fit under the seat in front of you or in the baggage compartment in the cabin. Baggage that is classified as overweight and/or is not properly packed is not allowed to be carried on the plane. According to applicable laws and regulations, passengers can carry liquids in hand luggage, if that luggage meets the following conditions:
a) Liquids must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100ml.
b) The containers for any liquids carried on board in hand baggage must be carried in a separate, clear-plastic, zip-top or re-sealable bag; the bag must not have a capacity exceeding 1 liter.

These plastic bags are subject to opening in security zones. You may be required to discard the liquid if it does not meet the above requirements.

Baggage delivery

You will receive your luggage when the luggage is transported to the destination. If you do not collect your luggage within a reasonable time period and we are required to hold onto your luggage, we may charge you a storage fee. If you do not collect your luggage within two months, we will dispose of such luggage without incurring any liability to you. Only passengers with the proper baggage tag can collect baggage. We will only hand over baggage to passengers who can prove their ownership of the baggage. If you fail to present a proper baggage tag at the baggage collection point, you must reimburse us for any delivery costs incurred by us in returning your luggage to you. The tag holders’ acceptance of the baggage at the time of transfer is taken as acceptance that the baggage holder agrees the baggage has been delivered in good condition and in accordance with the contract of carriage with us.

THE PROCEDURE OF GETTING VIETNAM VISA FOR FOREIGNERS

The procedure that provides electronic visa for foreigners has been applied for trial purpose by Vietnam Immigration Department since January 1^st 2017. The electronic visa is only applied for anyone who travels in Vietnam for less than 30 days.

1. The conditions to provide electronic tourist visa for foreigners include:

– Passport requires at least 6 months validity.

– To be a citizen of countries and territories which are in trial list to provide electronic visa in 2017 and 2018.

– The foreigner is not prohibited and restricted for entry following Vietnam’s regulations.

2. The procedure enumerated in the application for providing electronic visa for foreigners

– Step 1: To access on the website address for online electronic visa application of Vietnam Immigration Department

– Step 2: To enumerate online personal information, entry information,… following an available displayed form on the website, and to confirm the accuracy of information.

– Step 3: Pay online visa fees by online payment tools Visa Card or Master Card

– Step 4: After 2 or 3 days, Vietnam Immigration Department will send email a word file to the person who applied to get visa. The word file is electronic visa.

– Step 5: The person, who applied to get electronic visa, prints electronic visa file and completes the procedure of electronic visa application.

– Step 6: When entering in Vietnam, the foreigner presents their passport and visa at a place where they implement exit/entry procedures.

The supply of electronic visa is an important innovation in administration affairs in the process of implementing electronic government in order to simplify administrative procedures on information technology based.

VISA ON ARRIVAL (VOA)

Visa Approval Letter is a letter issued and confirmed by Vietnam Immigration Department. By showing the approval letter at Vietnam Airports upon arrival, travellers can pick up Visa and get visa stamped on their passports. At the airport, the corresponding authority will verify the details on the approval letter based on your passport and travel documents. As long as you make sure you input the correct details when applying, you will surely be granted entry upon arrival in Vietnam with the approval letter. Without the approval letter, travellers CAN NOT check in the international flights to Vietnam.

Application Guidelines for Vietnam Visa Approval Letters:

1. Send us your passport information (or passport copy)
2. Inform us your arrival date (apply for coming by airways only)
3. Make online secured payment by Credit Card for service fee from $15/person
4. Receive the approval letter via email ( after 2 working days for normal processing & 1 day/ 4 hours/ 1 hour for super urgent processing ).

VISA ON ARRIVAL PROCEDURES AT VIETNAM AIRPORTS:

At the ARRIVAL HALL inside the airports, there is a Landing Visa Counter (cấp visa tai chổ), in font of the check – in point counter, you have to prepare required documents to get visa stamp: your original passport ( valid for at least 6 months and left pages ), 2 ( 4×6 cm) passport photos, entry/ exit form ( you can DOWNLOAD HERE and cash in USD/VND:

• 1 month & 3 months single: 45 USD
• 1 month multiple: 65 USD,
• 3 months to less than 6 months: 95 USD
• and 6 months is 135 USD.

Vietnam Customs Clearance Officers will arrange Visa Stamp at the arrival airport for clients enter Vietnam by plane. If you do NOT enter Vietnam by plane, you should contact the nearest Vietnam Embassy to get visa.

The most important thing is that you bring up the Vietnam Visa Approval Letter when you enter Vietnam. Without this letter you cannot aboard the airplane and get visa when you arrive Vietnam.

Step 2: Find the main menu “Check-in online” and input all necessary information including “Family name”, “Departure City”, and “Reservation code” or “eTicket number” or “Frequent Flyer number”, then click “Check in”.

Step 3: Your flight itinerary will be shown on the screen, select your gender and click “Continue”

Step 4: In the seat map, select a seat in available seats on your flight, and then choose “Check in”

Step 5: The process of online check-in is completed. You can take a photo or print it or choose “Email mobile” to receive the bar code through email on your phone.

Step 4: Check the information and mark with a tick to select your flight route. If it is return ticket, select the flight which you need to check in. After that, click “Continue” and a seat map will be shown and choose a seat in available seats on the flights.

Note: “Green” means unoccupied seats and “Brown” means occupied seats.

Step 5: Check the flight information again and complete the check-in online process. You can choose “Print” or “Send email” of your flight’s information to your email account.
